• The total number of slides should not exceed 15.
Tips on power point presentations
An effective power point presentation should be: Big, Simple, Clear, Progressive, Consistent
1. Make it Big
Use font 24 and above, below that is too small to read on screen. You should be able to read from 7 feet away
2. Keep it simple
· Avoid using too many colours, fonts and styles
· Use 6 x 7 rule ; no more than six lines per slide and no more than seven words per line
· Avoid too long sentences or excessive detail, pick key aspects and put them in point form. The rest of the details can be communicated orally as you present.
· Simplify tables and figures e.g. use 105 rather than 100,000. Hide grid lines for graphs.
· Avoid too much artwork which tends to be distractive to the audience.
· Sound effects can also be distractive, use sound only when necessary
· Avoid complex transition styles that can be distractive.
3. Make it clear
· Avoid using all CAPITALS AS THEY ARE DIFFICULT TO READ ON SCREEN AND TEND TO TIRE THE AUDIENCE.
· Use sanserif fonts (e.g. AAA) rather than serif fonts (e.g. aaa)
· Italics are difficult to read on screen. Use normal or bold font
· Avoid Underlines as may signify hyperlinks, use color instead to emphasize.
· Numbering: use numbers for lists with sequence. Use bullets for lists without priority, sequence or hierarchy.
· Colours: use contrasting colours (light on dark vs dark on light). Use complementary colours (that do not bleed into each other).
· Size: size implies importance and focal points direct attention.
4. Be progressive
Do not give too much information at one go.
5. Be consistent
Differences draw attention, may imply importance.
Use surprise to attract not to distract
